In the early 1890's Ukrainians began to settle in Wilmington. Initially they traveled to a Ukrainian Catholic Church in Philadelphia. They also invited priests from Philadelphia to celebrate Divine Liturgy at the homes of parishioners or storefronts. They eventually converted a stable into a chapel. Records indicate that the chapel was in use in 1903.

In 1906 a committee purchased a lot on S. Heald St. In 1909 the church was erected largely with the labor of the parishioners themselves. The church received a charter incorporating St. Michael United Greek Catholic Ruthenian Church.

A rift soon developed between loyalty to 2 visiting parish priests. In 1911 the church was put up for a sheriffs sale due to declining members.

In 1912 the church was bought back including the purchase of an adjoining lot. In 1913 the church was incorporated as St. Nicholas Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church. A parochial school was founded in 1914. In 1923 the church hall was built.

Among the reasons for dissension in the church, the main one was the control of church property (Parish committee vs. Ukrainian Catholic Diocese). This led to many of the St. Nicholas parishioners to form the parish of SS Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 1927.

A religious society for women (The Apostleship of Prayer) was organized in 1932.

In 1940 the mortgage of the church building was paid off. A banquet was held and Rev. Gulcz from St. Hedwig's church on S. Harrison St. was given the honor of burning the mortgage since he loaned our church $7,800 and asked for only $7,300 to be repaid.

In 1948 the parish purchased a house for a rectory at 608 S. Claymont St.

In 1958 plans were announced to erect a new church in North Wilmington. In Oct. 1964 a lot was purchased for $30,000 at Lea Blvd & Miller Rd. In August 1967 excavation work began, construction began in June 1968. The cornerstone was laid on Dec. 7, 1968. Construction was finished on Feb. 15, 1969.
Rev. Andrew Baunchalk celebrated the first Divine Liturgy on May 4, 1969.

In Sept. 1969 the parish purchased a house at 801 W. Lea Blvd. for $33,500.
